  • Notes
    • Peter was born at home at 43 Daisy Street, Glasgow on 12 May 1921. He would probably have gone to primary School at Holy Cross primary in Govanhill or at St Mungo’s Primary in town head where his Grandmother stayed. He certainly went to St Mungo’s Academy in Townhead for his Secondary education and use to go to his Grandmother’s for his lunch. When he came to making his subject choices he wanted to do Science while the Marist Brother who was Headteacher, Brother Germanus, wanted him to do classics. Peter held out and studied Science becoming the top student. So much so that his father instituted the Peter Sherry Prize for Science which was given to the top Science pupil in the school every year. On completion of his studies at St Mungo’s the family moved to Dublin where he studied Chemistry at University where he obtained an Honours degree. Peter spent most of his working life as chief chemist in the Paper Mill at Clondalkin where the family stayed. In 1946/47 (approx.) he married Kathleen O’Neill known as Kitty and they had 8 children. Peter was a great fisherman and introduced the whole family to camping and fishing. Family holidays used to be taken at Greystones outside Dublin. He was a man of many interests one of which was Jazz although he was not a musician himself. He was Executive Secretary of the Irish Association of Songwriters and Composers from 1985 to1991 and they presented him with a Gold Disc when he retired. He died at home in Clondalkin in January 1993. (Courtesy Paul Byrnes)
