Picture Note: In land plot 2 John Hannaway left home in 1867 and married into Levelamore, inheriting its tenancy in 1886. Back in Slieve Gullion John later took over his parent's land (plot 2) in 1916, following the death of his brother Hughie. In plot 4 Michael McGee was from Denis (Dinny) Mcgee's household (No 5); Michael had married neigbour Catherine Farmer in 1865.
Picture Note: These households were at 850 feet and acess down to the (Longfield) road was mostly through Aughadanove townland. Since most could not read at this time "Aughadanove" was invariably recorded as their home on births/marriages, rather than "Slieve Gullion". • Notes

    • 1878 marriage records; Age entry "fullage" is 21 or older.
1878 marriage record of residence as"Ardanove" is inaccurate: there are no Hannaways in Ardanove/Aughadanove townland at this period. From the 1864 Griffiths Land Valuation the family home is in the first farmstead in Slieve Gullion townland which adjoins Adanove: the next field! To reach the house from the Longfield Road you climb the lane through Adanove to reach the house on the mountain - you're now in Slieve Gullion townland.

Hughie Hannaway died on 3 Jan 1915. Hughie's wife Bridget (Henry) died four days after Hughie on 7 Jan 1915. Her death is registered the next day 8 Jan 1915 by son Peter, home from Coatbridge in Scotland. Hughie's death on 3 Jan 1915 was not registered at Forkhill by son John until 18 January 1915. John, who was present at the death of his father is 25 years of age; older siblings may well have married or emigrated at the time.
In 1916 John Hannaway (now married into Levelamore) takes over as tenant of his brother Hugh's land on SlieveGullion, following Hugh's death in 1915.

"Hughie Hannaway's headstone in Mullaghbawn cemetry has nothing engraved about earlier burial dates." (From 2016 audio recording of Eugene McCann). The location of headstone in Cemetery not known - nowadays it seems to be for the family to locate headstones.

Eugene explained the route up to Hughie Hannaway's house from the Longfield Road - via the gate after Hughie Creegan’s. "It’s not a straight path, veer left; there are 2 fields & 2 fields up to Hughie’s. They had a horse & cart and had a cart-house half-way up where they took the horse out, reversed the cart in & left the cart there & just took the horse on up. It was tough going - that". (From 2016 audio recording of Eugene McCann).
